India Ranks 70th on Good Country Index

• India is the world’s 70th good country to live in amongst 163 other nations.
• The top three best countries included Sweden,Denmark & the Netherlands whereas Libya was ranked as the least good country in the world.
• This was according the ‘Good Country’ 2015 index.
• The Index attempts to define a good country as the one that serves the interest of its people & contributes to the good of the humanity

Nita Ambani Nominated to IOC

• Nita Ambani was nominated as a candidate to be a new International Olympic Committee (IOC) member.
• She becomes the first Indian woman to be nominated to the IOC.
• The election will be conducted at the 129th IOC Session in Rio de Janeiro between August 2-4.
• Mrs Ambani has been working in the field education & sports for a long time.
• The IOC is the supreme authority of the Olympic Movement

Int Day of Children Victim of Aggression

• The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression is observed on June 4 each year.
• The purpose of the day is to acknowledge the pain suffered by children throughout the world who are the victims of physical, mental & emotional abuse.
•  It was established on 19 August 1982.
• This day affirms the UN’s commitment to protect rights of children.

Sreeramakrishnan Elected Kerala Speaker

• P Sreeramakrishnan of the CPI (M) was elected Speaker of the Kerala Assembly.
• Sreeramakrishnan got 92 votes while the opposition UDF candidate V. P. Sajeendran got 46 votes.
• The House was dissolved after the election of Speaker & will reassemble on the 24th.
• Sreeramakrishnan has been elected to the Assembly for the second term from Ponnani in Malappuram district.

HAL-Built HTT-40 First Flight Successful

• The indigenous built Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40 (HTT-40), a basic trainer aircraft took to the skies for the first time & completed a basic flight without glitches.
• HTT-40 was piloted by Group Capt Subramaniam (Retd).
• The aircraft is aimed at being used for the first stage training for all flying cadets .
• The HTT-40 is a propeller-driven, turbo-prop aircraft for Stage-1 training of  pilots

India,Singapore Hold Defence Dialogue

• India & Singapore held the inaugural Singapore-India Defence Ministers’ Dialogue.
• It was co-chaired by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar & his Singapore counterpart Dr. Ng Eng Hen.
• The dialogue was aimed at raising of bilateral defence cooperation to the highest level.
• Singapore & India enjoy regular defence interactions in multiple areas, including defence policy dialogues &military exchanges.

Assam Passes Ease of Doing Business Bill

• Assam Assembly has passed the Assam Ease of Doing Business Bill, 2016.
• The bill has the provision for speedy processing of applications and issue of clearances for setting up industries.
• The basic aim of the bill is to create an investment-friendly environment for economic development of the state.
• The bill provides for establishing a bureau under the name of Assam Bureau of Investment Promotion.

France Declares Flood Emergency

• France has declared flood emergency after the River Seine in Paris burst its banks in some places displacing thousands of people.
• French President Francois Hollande has declared the region around Paris a natural disaster area.
• Paris police has upgraded their flood warning to orange – the second-highest level for areas near the Seine.
• The River Seine is at its highest level in more than 30 years.

Boxing Legend Muhammad Ali Passes Away

• Boxing legend Muhammad Ali has passed away.
• He was the three-time former world champion & among the greatest heavyweights in the history of the sport.
• He had suffered for 35 years with Parkinson’s disease.
• He was honoured with the task of lighting the flame at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
• He had received the highest US civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in 2005.

PM Modi Leaves on a Five-Nation Tour

• PM Modi has left on a 5 nation visit to Afghanistan, Qatar, Switzerland,the US & Mexico.
• The PM will first travel to Afghanistan where he will inaugurate the Afghan-India Friendship Dam.
• From Afghanistan, he will proceed to Qatar & then to Switzerland where black money is likely to be on the agenda.
• In the US,PM Modi will meet President Obama & also address a joint meeting of the US Congress.

Boxing Legend Muhammad Ali Dies At 74

 

i.  Muhammad Ali, former world magnificent heavyweight boxing champion has died at 74.

 

ii. Ali had suffered for three decades from Parkinson's Disease, a progressive neurological condition that slowly robbed him of both his legendary verbal grace and his physical dexterity. 

 

iii. He also wrote several best-selling books about his career, including The Greatest: My Own Story and The Soul of a Butterfly.

 

Odisha becomes first state to give social welfare benefits to transgender community

 

i. Odisha is first in the country to give transgender people social welfare benefits - such as a pension, housing and food grains.

 

ii. This move seeks to give the transgender community in the state same benefits as those living below the poverty line (BPL) in order to improve their overall social and economic status.

 

iii. They would also be entitled 5 kg of food grains every month under National Food Security Act.

 

 

 

IBC Gets Affiliation From Commonwealth Boxing Council

 

i. The Indian Boxing Council ( IBC ), a licensing body for professional boxers in the country which has Vijender Singh among others on its roster, has been granted affiliation by the Commonwealth Boxing Council.

 

ii. It is a National Boxing Governing body that sanctions professional boxing matches and awards national and subordinate championship titles.

 

iii. It is the first time in India where there is an opportunity for the Boxers to be professional. It also aims to promote and serve the sport of boxing, to implement fair, scientific and objective computerised systems.

 

 

 

Khattar inuagurates ‘Jai Jawan Awas Yojna’ to provide affordable housing to serving, retired JCOs

 

i. Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar laid the foundation stone of Jai Jawan Awas Yojna (JJAY), an initiative to provide affordable housing to serving and retired JCOs and Other Ranks at Bahadurgarh, Haryana.

 

ii. General Dalbir Singh, Chief of Army Staff was the Guest of Honour during the event.

 

iii. The project is being executed by Army Welfare Housing Organization and aims to provide low cost housing. This housing project has been named in the memory of Late Major Rajiv Joon, recipient of Ashok Chakra and Shaurya Chakra, who  had attained martyrdom fighting militants in Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir.

 

 

V.O.Chidambaranar Port Bags National Award For Excellence In Cost Management

 

 

 

 

i. V.O. Chidambaranar Port has bagged National Award for Excellence in Cost Management for the year 2015 from The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI) under the category of Public Service Sector- Small.

 

ii. This is the third time this port is receiving the award , the earlier years being 2008 and 2012. 

 

iii. The award has been given for exemplary performance of V.O. Chidambaranar Port towards optimization of manpower, savings in electricity, implementation of Solar Energy Systems, reduction of overall cost of handling by mechanization and improvising efficiency and logistics support. 

 

 

 

 

HDFC Ergo Buys L&T Insurance For Rs 551 crore

 

 

 

 

i. HDFC Ergo General Insurance, the insurance arm of mortgage lender HDFC, has acquired L&T General Insurance for Rs 551 crore.

 

ii. L&T General Insurance had reported gross earned premium (GEP) of Rs 483 crore for the last financial year, which puts the deal value at 1.14 times of the GEP. 

 

iii. L&T General Insurance is a wholly-owned subsidiary of infrastructure and engineering major Larsen & Toubro.

 

 

 

 

Leander Paes wins to complete mixed doubles ‘Career Slam’

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

i. Veteran Indian tennis star Leander Paes completed a 'Career Slam' in mixed doubles with Swiss partner Martina Hingis with a hard-fought win over compatriot Sania Mirza and Ivan Dodig, in Paris.

 

ii.It was 18th Grand Slam title for Paes and 10th in the mixed doubles.

 

iii. Defending champion Serena Williams will take on fourth seeded Spaniard Garbine Muguruza in Women's Singles final.
